Generally, I'm a person who doesn't often say happy birthday to people I once loved, and even if I see them on the street, I'll just ignore them. But the years pass and I hold on to whatever grudges I held.
For example, one of my exes had a birthday and I said to my friend, "Hey, it's his birthday," "Happy birthday," she replied, "Will you send it to him?" and somewhere along the line I hesitated but said, "Yes, I will."
It's 12 o'clock at night and I send the message "Happy Birthday, whatever you wish. I wish you health, happiness and lots of smiles!" You know, I was surprised by this message I sent, I was worried because I would either not send it or I would send a dry Happy Birthday.
I ran to my friend that night and told her and she replied that it was probably the best wish you've ever said to your ex. I joked with her that I should say goodnight to him and she called me a goddess.
But you know, by sending him a good wish without a trace of malice, I felt good about myself, a weight was lifted from my heart and I was freed from the regrets I was feeling. He responded to me in the kindest way an ex could respond.
I explained what I wanted and we wished each other good night. The result? I cried, not because I missed my ex, but because after many years I said a kind word to my ex and felt proud of myself.

Bad things are good, but at some point, a kind word makes us feel better, and maybe if our exes hear a kind word from us, they might just soften up with us and let nothing happen.
